 What is a good Friday?

Good Friday

Good Friday is a Christian holy occasion that commemorates Jesus Christ's crucifixion and death at Calvary. The feast falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday, as part of the Paschal Triduum, and may overlap with the Jewish Passover. It's also known as Good Friday, Black Friday, or Easter Friday, however the latter refers to the Friday of Easter week.

Good Friday is a widely observed legal holiday in many countries across the world, including most Western countries (particularly among Anglican and Catholic countries) and 12 U.S. states. Some nations, such as Germany, have laws outlawing specific practices such as the display of Blood Crosses (Crucifixes on which Christ is shown after his death) and the displaying of religious symbols such as the cross. Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands are among numerous nations with no nationwide ban on Good Friday.

The Good Friday tradition originated in the Middle Ages when it was observed by Christians in different countries as a day of fasting and abstinence from flesh meat including fish, eggs, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages as well as re-enactments or "relics" of crucifixions such as a re-enactment crucifixion or hangings. Some countries continue to observe it even today (e.g. that are considered to be profane, such as dancing and horse racing.

The day before Good Friday is known as Holy Thursday, or "Maundy Thursday", commemorating the Last Supper. On this day, in the Christian tradition, Jesus washed his disciples' feet, leading to a foot-washing ritual. In addition to fasting (See Lent below), Christians also prepare by attending church services, such as the blessing of palms or crosses.

On Good Friday itself, worshipers in many parts of the world attend church services or watch religious programs and services on television or online. Among others, some Christians spend time at cemeteries, meditating on the meaning of death and resurrection attributed to Jesus.

How Good Friday is celebrated?

Good Friday

The most important commemoration takes place in Vatican City, where crowds gather to see Pope Francis recite the Way of the Cross outside the Colosseum for Catholics from all over the globe. In the sky, a gigantic cross with torches burns, as believers light their own candles.

Catholics commemorate the day by fasting and praying in Churches. Afternoon services commemorate the moment when Jesus was crucified on the cross. Christians commemorate Jesus' sacrifices and the agony he endured in his last hours for the benefit of all mankind. The Veneration of the Cross is also observed in several churches. Christians kneel before the cross to confirm their faith in a simple ceremony.

Believers also abstain from eating meat on Good Friday. Some do not even drink liquids. This is in honor of their belief that Jesus had nothing to drink while he was on the cross.

After Evening Prayer and the Exsultet, some people begin a vigil in the Church when they stay awake until dawn and sing songs such as "Come, Holy Spirit" or perform operettas such as "The Seven Last Words". It is a time for quiet reflection for families and friends to share together and enjoy each other's company. They may read from Church documents called Gospels which contain accounts of Jesus' life, or from a Bible.

Traditionally, on Good Friday evening at the end of a Good Friday Vespers service, the priest may join several of his congregation in the procession from the front of the church to the side door for an informal meal outside. In many places, he will bring a small fish or pastel in a dish to symbolize Jesus Christ as "the" sacrifice for mankind. In some countries, he will bless them with holy water (in which there is usually an image of Our Lord and His Mother). Since eating in public is not generally permitted on Good Friday, Catholics often do this after Midnight Mass.

Christians in India visit churches to pay their respects to the Lord. Most government agencies, IT corporations, stock exchanges, and banks celebrate the day as a national holiday. According to the Bombay High Court's ruling, it is also a public holiday for residents of Daman and Diu, as well as Dadra and Nagar Haveli. In certain regions, parades are held in honor of Jesus. Religious programs based on Christianity are prevalent.

Good Friday is the most solemn day of the entire "Holy Week," and it is not marked with festivals or activities. It is a day on which Christians commemorate and honor Jesus' sacrifice.

Symbols Of Good Friday

Good Friday commemorates the death, passion, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The crucifix, which portrays Jesus Christ's death, is the most prominent emblem of Good Friday. A depiction of Jesus Christ is depicted on a few crosses. The black fabric is used to cover crosses, paintings, and sculptures in churches as another emblem of Good Friday. Furthermore, a few people remove all flowers from churches and homes to give them a basic appearance.
