MahaShivratri simply means "The Greate Night Of Lord Shiva". There are 12 shivratri in a year, but the Shivratri celebrated in the month of Feb-March is known as MahaShivratri. Shivratri usually comes 1 day before amavasya. This is special festival celebrated by people in India to devotee Lord Shiva in Hinduism. Mahashivratri is also the great night of Shiva as it marks the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This day has both spiritual and scientific importance.

The Mahashivratri festival will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 in the year 2022. This day is Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi of Falgun month.

  • Eat only satvik food one day before Mahashivratri, on Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month.
  • First and foremost, after waking up and going about your daily routines, having a bath, and so on, make yourself clean and pure.
  • After then, make a Sankalp of fasting by standing in front of Lord Shiva's statue or portrait. For your fast, pray to Lord Shiva for strength.
  • After having a bath and other rituals, worship Lord Shiva at the hour specified above.
  • Lord Shiva can be worshipped at a temple or at home.
  • We've already mentioned the most favourable time for devotion. You are free to worship how you choose.
  • Worship Lord Shiva with all your heart and soul.
  • Shiv Chalisa and Shiv Mantra Om Namah Shivaya should be said.
  • You can also recite Shivashtakam, Rudrashtakam, and other Hindu scriptures.
  • Do Lord Shiva's aarti as well.
  • If you are able, you can also conduct night awakening during Mahashivratri.
  • If you wake up in the middle of the night during Mahashivratri, keep reciting the Om Namah Shivaya Mahamantra.

About Lord Shiva




Lord Shiva is the one of the Supreme God Among the three which are Lord Bhramha, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva has many names like: Mahesh, Shanker, Mahadev. Lord Shiva is know to be as "Swayambhu" which means that he was created himself and not born. He exists before the universe and will exist after the universe.

One of the story of Lord Shiva in which he saved the world by drinking the poison himself which came out from the Samudra Manthan. This story explains us why throat of Lord Shiva is blue in color. Thus, MahaShivratri is also a thanks giving festival to Lord Shiva for protecting the world.

Because if Lord Shiva havent taken that pison, then the all the living beings of Earth would be have died.


How people celebrate MahaShivratri.


This is very auspicious day to get blessing from Lord Shiva. People do fasting and praise Lord Shiva for blessing. The married womens fast for their husband's long life and unmarried womens fast to get a gentle husband like Lord Shiva.

This is believed because Lord Shiva is conaidered as an good Husband. The temples are decorated with flowers. People gives Water, honey, milk to the Shivling(also known as abhishek) and also provises a special kind of leaves called as billipatra.

Then followed by sandalwood and rice, after which fruits and floweres are offered People performs various rituals, sings bhajans, dances and don't sleep on that day, they remains awake full night in the temple. The reason behind it is mentioned in further part of this article.


Why is Mahashivratri Celebrated?





In this regard, there are a few stories that are widely shared.

This is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati married. As a result, we all commemorate Shiva's wedding anniversary as Mahashivratri every year.

According to a mythology associated with the Mahashivratri festival, Halahal poison sprung from the ocean during the ocean's manthan.

This toxin was extremely harmful. Its consequences may have wiped out the entire cosmos. As a result, Mahadev Shiva ingested the poison in order to defend the world.

This poison had been injected into Lord Shiva's neck. His neck went blue as a result of the poison. Since then, Lord Shiva's name has been changed to Neelkanth.

The people who follows Shiva with full dedication practise sadhana/meditation on the night of Mahashivratri. Which makes them feel of peace and calm within the self. On the day Of MahaShivratri, the northern hemisphere part of the Earth has an particular upward pull energy.

Thus, we feel an upsurge pull within us we notice it carefull. Now this upsurge pull can be usefull to only those creatures who has straight vertibral columns or straight spines.

But as we know that only humans are developed in such a way that it has straight vertibral spines.

People chant "Om Namah Shivaya" matra in their prayer. They usually wakes up early, apply a touch of some ash on forehead. People also goes to temple. Baths with holy water, fast whole day. Some of the things they uses in their poojas are: milk, curd, flower, water, honey,etc.
